Why Have A Breast Enlargement?
The majority of women choose to have a breast augmentation (boob job), to increase their natural bust size.
However fluctuations in weight, pregnancy, subsequent breast-feeding and aging can cause breasts to lose their shape, volume and/or pertness. Implant surgery can frequently offer an effective solution to this problem, although sometimes a Breast Lift may also be required.
It is normal for a woman to have one breast bigger than the other but when the difference is very pronounced, an implant can be added to the smaller breast to provide a more symmetrical appearance.
For women who have had to have a mastectomy due to breast cancer, an implant can be used to replace tissue that has been removed.
Breast enlargement can also form part of gender reassignment surgery.

What Happens During A Breast Augmentation Operation?
Breast implants are placed either subgladular (infront of the muscle) or submuscular (behind the muscle) as decided by the surgeon. Usually the breast implant will be placed submuscularly only if there is very little breast tissue there to start with.
They are usually inserted through incisions in the inframammary fold (underneath the breast), although incisions can be made around the nipple (areola) or in the armpit (transauxillary). The augmentation surgery cost is slightly higher in these circumstances however as the operations require more skill.
What Are Breast Implants?
An implant is a prosthesis used during augmentation surgery to make breasts bigger. It is made of an outer layer of silicone and filled with either cohesive silicone gel or saline solution (salt water). The silicone gel is as a solid form which reduces the possibility of silicone migrating to other parts of the body if the implant splits.
Implants come in two different shapes: round and anatomical. Round implants tend to be the most popular choice for breast enlargement, although anatomical implants, which have a tear-drop shape, can also be used. These offer greater fullness at the bottom then at the top. The manufacture's life expectancy of implants is 10 to 15 years, although they can stay in without problems for much longer.
What Are The Complications & Implications of Breast Enlargement?
When the body undergoes breast augmentation it naturally forms a capsule around the implant. Complications can arise if this becomes too thick and contracts around the implant causing what is known as a capsular contraction. This occurs in around 10 percent of patients to some extent and usually starts six or more months after surgery. This can lead to pain, and/or an abnormally hard feel of the implant in the breast. Treatment may be needed and occasionally removal of the implant. The newer designs of implants have features to reduce the likelihood of this happening including a textured outer surface of the implant.
Enlargement does not usually interfere with breast-feeding and there is no evidence that any silicone is found in breast milk. The presence of breast implants does interfere in mammography, which is an X-ray screening method for breast cancer. Special X-ray views can be taken to minimize this interference.
Most women have some degree of asymmetry between breasts and breast augmentation may occasionally exaggerate this difference. Also a breast that has an underlying implant may not always feel a hundred percent natural. Some women may be more acutely aware of this than others. There is usually a difference in skin and nipple sensation following surgery which generally returns to normal with time, but not always.
The size and shape of the breast following enlargement surgery will adjust with time and is to some extent unpredictable, plus it is not always possible to create a cleavage. The weight of the implant may influence the age-related changes that normally take place in breasts. Movement of the fluid which fills the implant may occasionally be seen through the skin, this being more likely in the saline (salt water) filled implants, and less likely in the more viscous silicone gel implants, which also have a more natural feel.
There will be minimal scarring where the incisions are made for the breast augmention. These scars settle over 12 or more months and the appearance varies between different individuals. Occasionaly they can be raised which is called hypertrophic scarring, although the incisions are placed in such a position as to minimize visibility even when wearing a swimming costume.
Complications that occur with breast enlargement include those associated with all forms of surgery, as well as the specific problems of bleeding and infections. Any infection that may occur in the tissue around the implant can usually be treated with antibiotics but may require surgical removal of the implants. It may be necessary to wait a period of time before further enlargement surgery can take place. Implants are not expected to last a lifetime and breast implant replacement surgery should take place approximately every 10-15 years.
